Beware the Signs of a Failing Hard Drive

Click. Click. Click. That’s the horrible sound of hard drive failure.

Many a user has started their computer and heard this sound as they watch the boot process fail again and again. Hopefully, they have backed up crucial documents, data, photos, and video on their computer. Unfortunately, many users never back up, or fail to do it regularly and completely.

Before things get to this point, there are some warning signs of hard drive failure that you can watch for.

While that clicking sound usually means the drive has failed, other noises might tip you off to impending problems. Over time, you become accustomed to the sounds your hard drive makes as it accesses information. If you begin to hear any unusual sounds, whether whirring or extended “seek” noises as the drive hunts information, take immediate steps to back up your data, and speak to a professional data recovery company as soon as possible.

However, if you are one of the fortunate people to know and understand why your computer failed, there is a possibility that you will be able to avoid such an occurrence in the future. Usually, the reason a computer failed is because the hard drive fails. Failed hard drives can happen for a number of reasons, but don’t worry. Just because your hard drive has failed doesn’t mean the information on your computer is inevitably lost.
