Ensure a hard drive is securely packed by shaking the package back and forth, you should not hear anything moving inside.
- Guard the drive against static electricity. A touch of static to the electronics board will render the hard drive useless. The proper way is to wear a grounding strap and ground yourself by touching the metal back of your computer before unplugging it. Carefully unscrew your hard drive and put it in a static-proof bag. With an external hard drive, you need not worry about static electricity as the casing is enough static protection.
- Wrap your hard drive with 4 to 6 inches of bubble wrap. Tape both ends of the drive to the bubble wrap so as to prevent it from shaking around during the travel. When you shake the package back and forth, you should not hear anything moving inside.
- Pack the bubble-wrapped drive tight in a strong box or case to protect it against puncture wounds. You may need to fill the box with packing chips to provide extra protection against shocks. Then tape the box around securely.
- Choose a courier or shipping company with tracking features. This allows you to check if your hard drive really gets to its destination. Obtain a delivery confirmation, normally in the form of a tracking or consignment number. If the data your drive contains is even more valuable than the cost of the drive itself, ask about other forms of insurance while shipping.
