Click. Click. Click. That’s the horrible sound of hard drive failure.
Many a user has started their computer and heard this sound as they watch the boot process fail again and again. Hopefully, they have backed up crucial documents, data, photos, and video on their computer. Unfortunately, many users never back up, or fail to do it regularly and completely.
Before things get to this point, there are some warning signs of hard drive failure that you can watch for.
While that clicking sound usually means the drive has failed, other noises might tip you off to impending problems. Over time, you become accustomed to the sounds your hard drive makes as it accesses information. If you begin to hear any unusual sounds, whether whirring or extended “seek” noises as the drive hunts information, take immediate steps to back up your data, and speak to a professional data recovery company as soon as possible.
Beware spontaneous rebooting of the computer, and error messages relating to the drive
Note any changes in computer performance. Every time you start you computer, the primary and any secondary hard drives are recognized by the motherboard’s BIOS. If you are having anything more than infrequent boot-up problems, this could be a signal of a failing drive.
Every computer freezes every now and then. But if it’s happening more frequently, the hard drive could be the reason.
You may encounter slower file access times. This might simply mean that it’s time to use your computer’s drive defragmented. But if after defragmenting, file access is still slow and getting worse, be suspicious of the hard drive.
Also beware spontaneous rebooting of the computer, and error messages relating to the drive.
If you encounter any of these symptoms, consider yourself fortunate in a way. Sometimes hard drives fail without any warning.
Drives today are bigger than ever. That means, however, that even more information is at stake when they fail. After a drive fails, you must put aside your frustration and put together a list or best assessment of everything that was on the drive. Decide what can be replaced and what is irreplaceable to you.
At this point, it may be time to turn to a data recovery company like Kingdom Data Recovery to salvage your precious information. There is is always a chance that all information can be restored, as data recovery technology has been advancing along with hard drive technology, so give this option serious consideration.
And start backing up your data!
