eSATA Hard Drive Devices (External Serial Advanced Technology Attachment) is the external equivalent of a SATA hard drive. This connection type is a rival to both USB and FireWire. Currently with transfer speeds it is faster than USB 2.0 and FireWire 800, however not many new computers or laptops come equipped with the eSATA port as standard. There are of course adaptors you can purchase to solve this problem. Most external hard drives that use eSATA connections also combine USB or FireWire as well due to the popularity of these connection types.
