FireWire External hard drives (also known as a IEEE 1394 connection) is the main external device connection created by Apple. This is seen as the alternative to USB. Firewire connections were the first to offer speeds of up to 400 MB per second way before USB 2.0 was available and as a result was very popular professionals dealing with large file sizes such as graphic designers and film makers. Now with the release of USB 3.0 and the potential of 5 GB per second transfer rates Apple have announced it will be producing a connection to rival USB 3.0 promising transfer speeds up to 6.4 GB per second.
